May 16, 2018 – Would you believe it? Six tornadoes ripped through the area on the very day set for the Annual UFO Northeast Region Fly-In at Danbury, CT. The storm passed a few miles to the north with decent, possibly even flyable, weather forecast for the next day. The airport, the FBO and the restaurant, all reported functioning normally. So the Fly-In was postponed one day.

However, it was not to be. The devastation was so extensive that the cleanup operation shut the power down to the FBO, the tower and the entire airport. Restoration was estimated to take 5 to 7 days. It was a great disappointment because this particular meeting meant a lot to many of the 62 people who initially signed up to attend.

Linda Sollars had gone to great lengths to make it possible for our own Nina Claremont to come. Nina, (98) and a former 99s Powder Puff Derby flier was to be our special guest. The UFO was not to be deterred. The Fly-In became a Drive-In. Jerry Heller drove 3½ hours to be with us, Ed Hug 2½, Bob Hanlon 3½, Bea and Fred Forst 1½, and Jim Bean 2½. When people drive these distances in these conditions you know it was a very special meeting indeed.

Fortunately, Chuck’s had electricity so lunch for the 19 of us went as planned. We came as friends; I would say we left as family. It was a wonderful day.
