Aug 9, 2018 – The Texas South Central and South East areas of the UFOs came together for a very successful Fly-In on 9 Aug 2018 in Victoria, TX. Twenty members and guest attended. Several flew in while some drove in. It took place at the Victoria Reginal Airport. The meeting, lunch, and program were held on the airport at the “Sky Restaurant”. Note: In the past, the airport was Foster Air Force Base prior to its closing in 1959. In fact, the Sky restaurant was the Officer’s Club when it was Foster AFB. Therefore, it was a “nostalgia trip” for several of our retired Air Force members.
Members started arriving about 10:30 for a great social hour with many wild stories about current and past flight activities. Lunch was ordered from the restaurant’s special Fly-In menu about 11:30 and served in short order. This didn’t slow down the war stories much at all.
By 12:30 John Larrison (our UFO area Rep and Fly-In host) started a slide show presentation of his 1965 tour in Vietnam flying the A-1E Skyraider during 225 combat missions performing air to ground support of ground troop. Several pictures of the A-1 and its systems, a series of slides of a close air mission, and a deployment to Thailand to perform low altitude air cover during helicopter pick up of downed aircrews.
Following the presentation, a brief discussion was held to discuss future fly-ins, locations, and recommendations. The meeting ended with closing remarks from the South Central and East Reps, John Larrison and Dan Nicholson. Meeting wrap-up and closing was by our UFO VP Jim Cavender. A picture was taken for the record prior to departure and “Till We Meet Again.”
